Biography

Andrew Carstairs was born in 1780 in Kingsbarns Fife. His Father was Thomas Carstairs, a portioner.

Andrew was educated at the grammar school and studied at St Andrews University. He became a tutor to the family of Mr Lundin at Auchtermairny before being liscenced by the presbytery in 1802. He was ordained on the 9th of May 1805 and was the minister of Anstruther Wester for 33 years.

First Marriage

He married Mary Dickson on the 11 of Oct 1804 at Kingsbarns. [1]Andrew and Mary had at least 4 children.

  4. George Andrew 1817 who went to Australia

Mary died on the 14th of Oct 1817 age 31. [2]

Second Marriage

He secondly married Helen McClellan on the 27 July 1822 in Anstruther Wester [3]

Andrew died at Devon Grove, Dollar on the 11th of Oct 1838 and was buried in the family burial ground at Kingsbarns.[4]

His father Thomas was a portioner (https://www.dsl.ac.uk/entry/snd/portioner PORTIONER, n. 1. Sc. Law usage: the proprietor of a small estate or piece of land resulting from the division of an original piece of land among co-heirs or otherwise, a small land-owner (Sc. 1808 Jam., 1838 W. Bell Dict. Law Scot. 753), “the proprietor of a small feu” (Sc. 1946 A. D. Gibb Legal Terms 66). he died in 1817. Sadly the record gives no more information as to his age or spouse. [5]
