James Garland Carter was born November 25, 1825, in Simpson county, Kentucky. Simpson County was established in 1819 from Allen, Logan, and Warren Counties. James' father was Caswell Carter, born 1798, in Virginia, and his mother was Lavinia Jones, born 1802, a daughter of Thomas Allen Jones.
On June 5, 1855, in LaRue county, Kentucky, James G. Carter married Melvilla Brown. [1] James and "Melville" Carter are found on the United States census of 1870, living in Louisville, Jefferson county, Kentucky, with Edwin L. Carter, age 24, Annetta Carter, age 20, Allen R. Carter, age 14, and James Garland Carter, Jr. age 5, all born in Kentucky. 40 year old Maria Brown and 2 year old Biddie Brown are also living in the household, as well as the Lanil family. [2]
James died December 17, 1889, in Louisville, Jefferson county, Kentucky [3] and is buried in the Cave Hill Cemetery. [4]
James Garland Carter was named for Caswell Carter's half-brother, James Garland Mcallister.
