Biography

John Cartwight was a Catholic landowner in St. Mary's, Maryland. He migrated to the Roses Mill area of Amherst County, Virginia in February of 1770. John Cartwright purchased 135 acres on the north side of the Tye River south of Roses Mill from Ambros Jones, a large landholder. Cartwright’s newly purchased land shared common borders with Thomas Jefferson‘s in the Amherst, Virginia holdings.

Marriages

He married was the widow of Samuel Maddox and John Bowling.

He was secondly married to Margaret Patterson of St. Mary's, Maryland and they had, at least, two children.

John Cartwright's family group also included his step-sons, Edmund Bowling and James Bolling, who also had migrated from St. Mary’s, Maryland. He married Susannah Lee Bolling Maddox, the widow of John Bolling and Samuel Maddox. John Cartwright was her third husband. [1]
