Raymond Leonard was born in 1915 at West Bromwich, Staffordshire, the son of Joseph Cartwright and Edith Cartwright formerly Hallard. [1]
In the 1921 census the Cartwright family was living at 133 Dial Lane, West Bromwich. Father Joseph, aged 42, was a mill furnaceman at F. R. Simpson & Co, Oldbury. Mother Edith was aged 40. Siblings were Lily, aged 19, a servant at Palfreyman Drapers in Black Lake; Edith Hilda, aged 14, a servant at Flowerdew Chemist, Hill Top; Joseph Clarence aged 12 and Roland aged 4. Raymond Leonard was aged 6 years. [2]
Raymond L Cartwright married Eliza M Phipps in 1938 at St Francis of Assisi Church, West Bromwich. [3]
The 1939 Register, taken on 29 September 1939, has been described as a snapshot of the civilian population of England and Wales just after the outbreak of the Second World War. The Register recorded each person's address, date of birth and occupation.
At that time Raymond and Eliza were residing at 87 New Road, Tipton, Staffordshire. Raymond L. born 31 March 1915, was aged 24. He was an aluminium floor moulder. Eliza M, born 22 December 1914, was also aged 24. [4]
This couple had several children but May, as she was known as, suffered from severe diabetes and lost several at birth or soon after.
Son Stanley Cartwright died in 1939 in infancy. [5]
Family advise Stanley was born on 26 October 1939 and died on 31 October 1939. He was buried on 4 November 1939 at Heath Lane Cemetery [Grave V 1972] with his grandfather Joseph Cartwright.
Son Robert Cartwright died on 1 July 1951 at Hallam Hospital, West Bromwich aged 1 day of congenital atresia of the oesophagus. His death certificate further recorded Robert was the son of Raymond Leonard Cartwright, an iron moulder, of 184 Canterbury Rd, West Bromwich. The informant of his death was E. Bromley of 135 Canterbury Rd, West Bromwich, described as the person causing the body to be buried. [6]
Eliza M Cartwright died in 1962 aged 47 years. [7]
She was cremated on 12 July 1962 at the West Bromwich Crematorium. The cremation register recorded Eliza May died on 6 July 1962 aged 47 years. She was a married woman and a housewife. Eliza had been residing at 184 Canterbury Rd, West Bromwich at her death. The person who applied for the cremation was her husband R. L. Cartwright Esq., of the same address. Eliza's ashes were scattered. [8]
Raymond Leonard Cartwright died in 1969 aged 54 years. His date of birth was recorded as 31 March 1915. [9]
He was cremated on 13 June 1969 at the West Bromwich Crematorium. The cremation register recorded Raymond Leonard, a widower, died on 9 June 1969 aged 54. He had been working as a plastic moulder. Raymond had been residing at 184 Canterbury Rd, West Bromwich at his death. The person who applied for the cremation was son Raymond H Cartwright of Weymouth, Dorset. Raymond's ashes were scattered. The Coroner of the County Borough of West Bromwich signed his death certificate. [10]
