James died on November 21, 1681 in Charlestown aged 81.

James' descendant (relationship not yet established) "Samuel Cary graduated Harvard College in 1731, and on December 24, 1741, he married Margaret Graves, the twenty-two-year-old daughter of Thomas Graves and Sybil Foster Avery from Charlestown, a village that Margaret's grandfather, Thomas Graves, had settled in 1629... Captain Cary was often away at sea, for intervals up to six years..." Their son Samuel was born 20 Sep 1742.[3]
