Biography

Carmela Cascio is born on 10 December 1856, daughter of Leoluca Cascio, a farmer, and his wife, Maria di Palermo. She is baptized two days later as Carmelam, named after her paternal grandmother. Her godparents are Cajetanus Cascio and Maria di Palermo (who shares a name with her mother), a married couple.

Carmela marries Paolo Arsena on 26 April 1875.

Carmela and Paolo have at least seven children: for Giovanni (1876), Giuseppe (1879), two sons named Leoluca (1882 and 1888), two daughters named Marianna (1885 and 1894), and Francesco (1892).

Giovanni is born and baptized Joannem on 28 June 1876. He is their first known child. His godparents are Ferdinandus Lucera and Maria Arsena, a married couple.

Giuseppe is born and baptized Josephum on 22 January 1879. His godmother is Marianna Arsena, who is unmarried.

The first Leoluca is born 5 January 1882 and baptized Leonem Lucam the next day. His godparents are also Ferdinandus Lucera and Maria Arsena.

Leoluca dies at two years and four months of age on 31 May 1884.

The first Marianna is born and baptized Mariam Annam on 3 August 1885. Her godmother is Maria Anna Arsena, wife of Stephani Ridulfo.

Marianna dies at one year and two months of age on 8 October 1886.

See the Cascio Family Space for a short discussion on naming conventions.

The second Leoluca is born 6 December 1888 and baptized on 9 December. His godfather is the unmarried Franciscus Fogliano.

Francesco is born the morning of 12 June 1892 at 8:15 am, and baptized the same day. The language of this baptismal record is different from most I've seen in the San Martino records of this time. It appears to say that because of the danger of death at home, the baby was baptized by the midwife, Carmela Cammarata, as Francisci Pauli Antonini. His godparents are Nicolaus Ridulfo and Carmela Cammarata.

A second daughter named Marianna is born 5 November 1894 according to the church record, and baptized 12 November as Mariannam. Her godparents are Cajetanus D’Anna and Ursula Menghi.
