Biography

Giuseppe Cascio is born July 28, 1852 on via San Elena in Corleone to Leoluca Cascio, age 41, agricola/farmer and Salvatrice Ligotino, age 26. Giuseppe is baptized the same day. His godparents are Leoluca Gennusa and Giuseppa, his sister.

Leoluca dies age 64 (b. 1808), on 19 April 1872. At the time of his death, he resides in via Santo Bono. Salvatrice survives him.

Open issue: Leoluca and Salvatrice's ages grow younger in the extract of Francesco's birth information, presented with his 1881 marriage. I know I originally got Giuseppe's birth information above from a similar extract, but I have saved the wrong link; the one below is only to the Atti di Matrimonio, not the publicazione, which contains supporting documents.

Giuseppe marries Angela Grizzaffi, a 17 year old contadina (peasant), daughter of Giovanni Grizzaffi and Biagia Quaglino, on 3 November 1880. Giuseppe's older half-brother, Salvatore (b. 1846) is already married to Angela's older sister, Anna Maria. Giuseppe's parents have both passed away by this time.

Giuseppe and Angela have at least seven children together: daughters Salvatrice ("Tillie") (1881), Biagia (1884), Leoluca (Louis) (1887), Maria (1889), Giovanna ("Jennie") (1892), Rosa (1894), and Giovanni ("John") (1897).

Salvatrice is born 16 September 1881 and baptized Salvatricem the next day. Her godparents are Francesco and Vincenza Cascio, Giuseppe's brother and sister.

Biagia is born 4 June 1884 at 3 Via Banditore, Corleone, when Giuseppe is 32. Both parents are listed as contadini (peasants). She is baptized on 7 June. Her godparents are Giuseppe Vaccaro and Giuseppa la Torre, who are not married. She is the only sibling who does not appear to immigrate.

Leoluca, named after his paternal grandfather, is born on 13 January 1887 and baptized 17 January. His godparents are Gioachino Colletti and Rosaria, his unmarried sister.

Maria is born 3 August 1889 and baptized four days later. Her godfather is Bernardo di Miceli, who is unmarried.[1] Maria is later called "Mary."

Giovanna (baptized Joanna, later known as Jennie) is born 24 February 1892 and baptized Joanna on 29 February. Her godparents are Giovanni Scalisi and Giovanna Gennaro.

At the 9 December 1894 birth of Rosa, the family is living at #3 via Banditore in Corleone. While ordinarily the father reports a birth for civic records, in this case he is on his sick bed, so Rosina Bonaccorso, age 28, a levatrice (midwife) reports it.

Giovanni (John) is born 22 June 1897 and baptized in San Martino parish of Corleone July 1. His godparents are Antonino La Barba and Joanna (called Lucia) Grizzaffi, Angela's older sister and her husband.

Giuseppe dies at age 46 (b. 28 Jul 1852) on 6 January 1899 at 4:30 pm. The record of his death does not mention that he leaves a widow.

In 1903, Angela is living in New York, having immigrated in 1901 (See her record for more info.) Rosa, 8, and Giovanni, 6, join her 19 November 1903, traveling with their uncle, Angela's brother Leoluca Grizzaffi, 43, and cousin Biagia Grizzaffi, 11. The Grizzaffis are joining his nephew Giocchino Crescimanno, where Angela is staying with her sister Salvatrice, Gioachino's mother, who is married to Leoluca Crescimanno.
