Biography

Death. (1903, October 9). Canowindra Star and Eugowra News (NSW : 1903 - 1907; 1910 - 1911; 1914 - 1922), p. 2. http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article144635008 Death Seldom indeed has it fallen to our lot to record a death with more sorrowful environments than that of Mrs. John Grimshaw, which took place at noon on Monday last. Deceased was the wife of Mr. Jno. Grimshaw, son of the late Mr.H. Grimshaw, of Soldier's Flat. The immediate cause of death was peritonitis supervening on puerperal fever. The case is surrounded by most unfortunate circumstances. A baby girl was ushered into the world half an hour before the nurse, Mrs. Denham, who had been engaged arrived, and after the patient had been attended to everything for a short time appeared to progress satisfactorily. Later, however, the patient becoming very much worse, Dr. Birchill was sent for on Wednesday. Examination showed the poor lady to be suffering from puerperal fever in its worst form. The fever was reduced to normal within 24 hours and the cause of the trouble removed, after which the patient was brought to Canowindra that she might be under the immediate eye of her medical attendant. The case was a most serious one from the outset, and though hope of her recovery was indulged in for a time in consequence of the disease having been conquered, peritonitis supervened and subsequently proved fatal. The unfortunate woman expired at noon on Monday last, having received every attention from her medical attendant.Mrs. J. H. Marshall and other ladies as well as Mrs. Denham. Besides a young husband, deceased leaves behind, including the newly born infant, four children, three girls and a boy, all under the age of six years, to mourn her loss.Mrs Grimshaw was a native of the district, a daughter of Mr. T. Castles, of Soldiers Flat, and had a large circle of friends and relatives. During her illness spiritual comfort was rendered by Rev.J. H. Bowsell, C.E. clergyman of Canowindra. The funeral took place on Tuesday, leaving Canowindra at about 10 a.m , the body being interred in the C. E. portion of Canowindra General cemetery. Rev.J. H. Bowsell officiated at the grave, the mortuary arrangements being in the hands of Mr W. H. Atkinson. The scene at the grave side, over which we draw a veil, was most pitiful, there being few dry eyes amongst the large assemblage present.
