John Harley Castleberry was born on December 5, 1888 in Coal Hill, Johnson County, Arkansas. His father was Daniel Boone Castleberry, and his mother was Dorothy Emmaline Hall.[1]
In 1900, he lived in Justice Precinct 8, Red River County, Texas.[2]
In 1910, he lived in Hickman Township, Scott County, Arkansas. He lived with his brother Elmer and farmed to earn his living. The census record said he owned his own farm, but it is unclear if this was a separate piece of land or if he shared it with his brother.[3]
In 1915, he lived in Coal Hill, Johnson County, Arkansas. He married Juanita Florence Crites on January 10, 1915 in Johnson County, Arkansas.[4] That same year his daughter Edith Evelyn was born, and his daughter Mildred was born in 1917.[5] At age 28, he was tall and had a stout physical appearance. He had dark brown hair and grey colored eyes.[6]
In 1920, he lived on West Avenue in Ozark, Franklin County, Arkansas. He owned his own home free and clear of any mortgage. He also owned his own barber shop and earned a living cutting hair.[5]
In 1924, his son Carl Elwood was born. After the birth of his last child, he lived in White Oak Township, Franklin County, Arkansas. He owned his home and was farming to earn his living. He did not own a radio set, which was considered a luxury item at the time.[7]
In 1940, he lived in Alix Township, Franklin County, Arkansas. He owned his home, valued at $300.[8]
In 1942, he lived in Altus, Franklin County, Arkansas. He continued to farm for himself to earn his living. At age 53, he stood 5 feet and 11 inches tall, weighed about 200 pounds and had a ruddy complexion. He had black hair and blue colored eyes.[9]
John died on January 1, 1962 in Franklin County, Arkansas. He was buried at Highland Cemetery in Ozark, Franklin County, Arkansas.[10]
