Sanders, English Baronies, pp.134-135.

This is one of the most northern baronies and therefore it was not part of England in 1086 for Domesday Book. However, Gospatrick's pre-Norman holding of the area was later recognized as relevant, according to Sanders, and so we include him and his son Waldeve and grandson Alan.

Papcastle's barony was a district of Allerdale, below the Derwent. (The barony of Egremont held Copeland, Allerdale above the Derwent.) To its north was another barony, Burgh by Sands.

The lords of this barony, at least when it was united, also held the honour of Cockermouth. See The Honour of Cockermouth. T. H. B. Graham
