Biography

John was baptised on the 18th November 1818 at St John Haymarket[1] by his parents William and Rebecca Catterall. William was noted as a gardener and they were living at Low Hill.

On the 10th June 1832[2] he married Mary Rainford at St Paul's Church in Liverpool. The marriage, after the calling of banns, was witnessed by George and Mary Mocroftsic.

The 1841 Census[3] has John Cattrell living at Salamanca Court, Kensington in West Derby. He is employed as a Brickmaker and is shown as 25 years of age. Also in the home is his 25 year old wife Mary, 9 year old son Peter and 2 year old son William.

By the 1851 Census John Catterall is now indicated as being a 40 year old labourer and is living with his 40 year old wife Mary, 19 year old labourer son Peter, 13 year old son William and 7 year old son John. The address is now Kensington, West Derby.

Liverpool Mercury 31 May 1859 DEATH FROM LOCKJAW.—On Sunday last, John Catterall, a labourer, residing in Knowles-court, Kensington, died from lockjaw, resulting from an injury which he received some time ago. An inquest will be held on the body.

Liverpool Mercury 3rd June 1859 Page 10 DEATH FROM LOCKJAW.—An inquest was held on Tuesday on the body of John Catterall, a labourer, aged 48, who resided at 9, Knowles Court, Kensington. He was employed by the corporation in removing stones from the Trafford Dock to Lime-street, and on the 2nd of May he hurt his toe by letting one of the stones fall upon it. He died on Sunday last from tetanus. Verdict accordingly.

John was buried on the 1st June 1859 at St Mary's Church, Walton On The Hill, Liverpool[4].
