Biography

Mary Caulfield was born in Ulster, likely about 1740. She emigrated to Nova Scotia with her husband Richard McHeffey, and their son Daniel emigrated from Ireland. There are two differing accounts of the McHeffeys' immigration to Nova Scotia:

• In the first version, the family may have arrived in Nova Scotia in 1769 as passengers on the ship Admiral Hawke bearing Ulster Scots from Londonderry to Philadelphia. It foundered off Sable Island and the passengers were brought to Halifax and convinced to stay in Nova Scotia.
• A second version has Daniel crossing the Atlantic with his father about 1776 at the age of 11. This version seems unlikely if he had siblings born in Nova Scotia before that date, as is recorded elsewhere.^[1]

She passed away on January 26, 1790 in Windsor, Hants, Nova Scotia.^[2]
