Biography

John Causer was born in about 1851 in Colton, Staffordshire, England. He was the son of Benjamin Causer and Mary Elizabeth Unknown.

In 1861, Elizabeth Causer (67, household duties) and her husband, Benjamin (65, baker and flour dealer, born Colton, Staffordshire) are living at 89-90 Spon End, Coventry, England. Their children, Sarah (28, a silk winder), Henry (26, a finisher of watches) and John (10, a scholar born Colton, Staffordshire) are living with them. [1][2]

Research Note

Mary Elizabeth would have been about 55 at the time of John's birth. This, and the fact he was born in her husband, Benjamin's birthplace of Colton, Staffordshire and not their residence of Spon End, Coventry like the other children, makes him unlikely to be the couple's natural son. I suspect he is either Sarah's son outside of wedlock and she went out of town to have him, or he is an adopted member of the wider family.

  • Response: I wondered if he could be a legit. grandson (and whoever filled in the census form made a mistake). Colton was in Lichfield reg. district. There's a John Causer reg. in Q3 1853 in Lichfield, mmn Leadbetter. There's a John Causer + Sarah Leadbetter marriage in 1844 in Tatenhill. Staffordshire but that John is the wrong age to be Benjamin's son. It's a puzzle. (French-15198).

However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:
