Biography

Ethel or Betty as she was also called was born on 11 November 1920 at Nundah, Brisbane, Queensland, Australia.^[1] Her parents Edward and Ethel Cavanagh nee Farn had emigrated to Australia in 1914. Betty was the youngest of three children. She had two elder brothers, Bill and Ted.

In about 1918, Betty's Father decided he wanted to return to the United Kingdom. His wife did not want to return and wanted instead to remain in Australia. They separated and Edward went to live at Newcastle-Upon-Tyne.^[2] So for much of Betty's childhood, she grew up without a Father.

When Betty was a teenager, she saved up 50 pounds and "ran away" from home. She left Brisbane to live in Wellington, New Zealand. She took a room at Oriental Bay and found work as a Book-keeper.^[3]She met and married Alan Howie.

Betty's first child, and only daughter Vivienne was born on 10 December 1942.

After Vivienne she had four sons, Francis, Bruce, Peter and Rex. She and Alan raised their children at 28 Bush Street, Naenae, Lower Hutt, Wellington. [Insert Nana Cavanagh's visits here] As the children got older and were at School, Betty again found work as a Book-keeper.

She passed away 30 December 1972 at Wellington Hospital and was cremated at Karori, Wellington.^[4]Her death registration recorded that she was 52 years of age and for 32 of those years she had been in New Zealand.
