Obituary

LATE MR. J. H. CAWTHORN.

Our travelling correspondent writes -The death last week of Mr John Henry Cawthorn of Wattle Grove moves from the Cygnet municipality one of its best-known and most highly respected citizens. A native of Tasmania where he was born in 1840, at Macquarie Plains, the eldest son of the late Mr Henry David Cawthorn, and grandson of the late Mr. John Henry Cawthorn who came to Tasmania in 1818, the deceased was educated at the late Mr Robert Giblin's school. Now Pressland House, Hobart. On the completion of his studies, he engaged in farming pursuits on his mother' s property at Arundel Macquarie Plains. In 1879 he took up the property of High Arundel, Wattle Grove, comprising 133 acres, 14 acres of which were laid in small fruits and general orchard. He specialised in the cultivation of the Sturmer, Scarlet and French Crab apples, a few varieties of pears, and apricots, plums, and currants, besides having a small nursery of standard trees. He was very successful as a shipper of fruit to European and interstate markets. He did much to promote the interests of the district, and was for many years a member of the Port Cygnet branch Board of Agriculture. For a time he was also a member of the old Port Cygnet Road Trust and Fruit Board. He was married to Miss Martha A. Cockerill, daughter of the late Mr Henry M. Cockerill, and had a family of eight children two of whom are orchardists at Wattle Grove-Messrs George and Claud E. Cawthorn. Another son Mr. W. S. Cawthorn, was captain of the s.s.
