New Zealand's first female professional photographer.
Elizabeth, daughter of William Chadd & Mary, was baptised on 26 August 1838 in Lymm, Cheshire, England.[1]
Her birth was registered in the Jul-Aug-Sep quarter of 1838 in the Altrincham district.[2]
In the 1841 census Elizabeth (age 2) was in Lymm, Cheshire, England.[3]
In the 1851 census Elizabeth (age 12) was the daughter of William Chadd in Stars, Lymm, Cheshire, England.[4]
Elizabeth's marriage to George Pulman was registered in the Apr-May-Jun quarter of 1859 in the Manchester district.[5]
Elizabeth and George Pulman sailed in the Broadwater on 3 April 1861 from Gravesend, London; they arrived in Auckland, New Zealand, on 30 July 1861
She married John Blackman in 1875.[6]
Born in England, Elizabeth Pulman travelled to New Zealand with her husband George Pulman – a draftsman who later opened a photographic studio in Auckland - in 1861.
After her husband's death in 1871, Pulman took on her husband's studio and in the process became New Zealand's first female professional photographer.
She ran Pulman's Photographic Studio for almost 30 years, for a time along with her son, Frederick.
Some of her most famous photographic works include portraits of Chief Paul Paora Tuhaere, King Tawhiao and Tawhia's daughter and second wife. She also raised nine children.
The photography of Elizabeth and George Pulman – mainly portraits and scenic shots - are viewed as highly historic works. Some remain in museums and in public libraries around New Zealand.
She passed away in 1900.[7]
Elizabeth was mentioned on a memorial in Purewa Cemetery, Meadowbank, Auckland Council, Auckland, New Zealand with a death date of 3 February 1900.[8]
Elizabeth's birth was registered in 1838. Her age recorded at death and on her gravestone would indicate a birth year of 1836. Presumably the family thought she was two years older than her actual age.
