Early Life

Robert was the son of Shelby W Chadwick and Mary Ann Meredith

In the 1850 census, Robert (age 5) was living in Greene County, Alabama, with his parents and four siblings.^[1]

In the 1860 census, Robert (age 15) was in Greensboro Beat 4, Greene, Alabama.^[2]

Military Service, Civil War

The following information is from Robert's military file on Fold3:

Robert enlisted as a private in Company I, 5th Alabama on Aug 9, 1861. The company was renamed Company D.

On the muster roll for September & October 1861, Robert is reported: "absent, sick in hospital at Bristow."

Robert received discharge papers on August 13, 1862, due to being under the age of 18 (he was 17). The discharge papers contain the following information:

Robert then reenlisted at Grace Church, Virginia on February 9, 1863.

Robert was reported missing by his regiment after the Battle of Chancellorsville, Virginia on May 2-3, 1863. A report from the Army of the Potomac states he was captured at Fredricksburg on May 3, 1863, forwarded to Washington, D. C. that day, paroled on May 4, 1863, and sent to City Point, Virginia for prisoner exchange on May 10, 1863.

On muster rolls for August, September and October 1863, Robert was absent on wounded furlough.

Medical Records: On May 15, 1864, Robert was admitted to General Hospital, Howard's Grove, Richmond, Virginia with cause "Feb remittens" or remittent fever, often used to refer to malaria.

On May 17, Robert was transferred to Danville, Virginia.

On a record dated May 18, 1864, Robert's condition was listed as Debilitas, which is a general weakness, lameness or infirmity. He was in private quarters on May 25, 1864, and returned to duty on July 15, 1864.

On March 29, 1865, Robert was on the roll at Way Hospital, Meridian, Mississippi. He had been wounded. On April 5, 1865, Robert was on the register of Yandell Hospital, Meridian, Mississippi. The same complaint - he had been wounded. Likely he was transferred between hospitals, although the record does not show the transfer.^[3]

Robert was in a military muster roll record with an enlistment date of 9 August 1861. He was in the 5th Alabama Infantry Regiment.^[4]

Marriage

Robert married Mirerva "Nannie" A Wright on June 3, 1868, in Washington County, Texas.^[5][6][7][8]

In the 1880 census Robert (age 36), Broker, was the married head of household in Austin, Travis, Texas, He and his wife had two children at home.^[9]

In the 1900 census, Robert (age 56), Book Keeper, was the married head of household in Houston, Harris, Texas. His wife Nannie was 28, and reported that she had borne three children and all three were still living.^[10]

In the 1910 census Robert (age 65) and Nannie (58) were living in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Robert indicated that he was a confederate veteran. Their daughter Mary (40) lived in the household and was employed as a kindergarten teacher. ^[11]
