Biography

Margaret or Alice was born in Platteville, Grant County, Wisconsin in September of 1843 ^[1], a daughter of Joseph Chalder and Alice Waller.

1850 U.S. Census, Eastern District, Grant County, Wisconsin: Margaret E. Chalder, age 7, born in Wisconsin, attending school, living in her mother Alice Chalder's household with six of her siblings. ^[2]

1860 U.S. Census, Table Mound Township, Dubuque County, Iowa: Alice Chalder, age 17, born in Wisconsin, living in her mother's household with three siblings. Note: Alice's future husband Leonard Radford was listed two families after on the census report, and her brother William Chalder was listed two families before. ^[3]

Alice married Leonard Radford in Dubuque, Iowa on 24 December 1860. ^[4] They had at least eight children together.

1870 U.S. Census, Table Mound Township, Dubuque County, Iowa: Alice Gratford, age 27, keeping house, born in Wisconsin to parents of foreign birth, living in the household of her husband Leonard Gratford with children Martha, Alice and Ella. ^[5]

Leonard Radford died in 1892. ^[8]

Radford, age 55, widowed, a mother of 8 children - 3 living, born in Wisconsin in September of 1844, parents born in England, able to read and write, living in a home she owned free of mortgage with her son Robert Radford. ^[9]
