Biography

Henry Chambliss was born about 1704 in Prince George County, Virginia.[citation needed] He is named in his father's will, written Oct. 31, 1717, at which time he was not yet 21. His father's will stated that "if my wife [Mary] marry, and cannot rule the children that Wm.Robert Bolling shall have my son Henry, and be his Guardian, and my son William to Hugh Golightly, till they come to age, and their Estates with them."[1]

"Mary Chamnis" was an executor of the will with Robert Bolling, which was proved at a "Court held at Merchants Hope for Prince Geo.County" on June 9, 1719.[1]

1704, Prince George County, Virginia[2][3]

1728, Prince George County ,Virginia[4]

Date of will or inventory or accounting. Apparently it was an inventory (per comment, which notes that it was from Order Book 2, page 370).[6]

Research Notes

Name: Since Chamnis was the spelling for his father's 1717/1719 will, it is likely that this Henry was born Chamnis. One of the duplicate profiles for one of the Henrys said (without citing a source) that Henry changed the spelling of his surname to Chambliss. Perhaps that was this Henry.

Disputed Children

Jacob: Many Ancestry trees show a son Jacob of Henry and Francis Chambliss born in Virginia on 26 May 1729. This is the exact date recorded for the daughter Mary of Henry and Francis, with no indication that she was a twin. It would seem quite possible that someone assumed Jacob was also their son, without basis, and because his birthdate needed to be around the same time, assumed that they were twins.

Jacob's death date10 January 1761 given in most of those same unsourced trees is the date of the will of Jacob Chambless of Alloways Creek Twp. in Salem County, New Jersey (see the link on his profile). While migration between Virginia and New Jersey happened at that time, it was still quite rare and a claim of such a migration had better be backed up by sources. This Jacob would have been born around 1728, so it is easy to see how the two men got conflated.

Frances born 1719: An unsourced profile for Frances Chambliss (1719-1789), wife of John Hardy Holloway (abt.1710-1786), was attached as a daughter (and then detached) in September 2023. The profile for Frances born 1719 that was attached had a profile for a daughter attached also: Mary (Holloway) McCoy (1735-1819). Henry's daughter Frances was born in 1732.[5] At one point, a David Holloway had been attached to her profile (Chambliss-13, born 1732), but was detached because dates/locations did not align (see Chambliss-13#Research Notes). Update - clicking around on profiles attached to the Frances born in 1719 discovered a FamilySearch link that led to her FamilySearch PID - FamilySearch Person: GCRS-NZL - which has her attached to Henry & Frances (both born 1704), supported by one source as of 26 September 2023, an unsourced/unsupported Find a Grave memorial: Find A Grave: Memorial #243257850.

Second Wife

Henry, son of Henry Chamnis,[7] born c1704, married twice: (1) Frances, (2) Catherine.[8][9]
He may have had a daughter with Catherine named Cattron (or Catherine), who was the second wife of Joseph Ingram and mother of his three youngest daughters... or possibly Henry's widow was Joseph's second wife (considering the following notes from the FamilySearch PID of Joseph's first wife, Frances).[10]
Cattron Chambless' parents may have been Henry and Catherine Chambless (also, Chambliss) who are referred to in "Brunswick Co., VA County Court Order Books 1732-1864." On 22 Jun 1778 there is an entry of sale of property between "Henry Chambliss and Catherine his Wife of the one part." On 23 Aug 1784 in the same source we read, "Will of Henry Chambless dec was proved. Catherine Chambless was executrix." The Virginia Census, 1810 shows entries for Catharine Ingram and Catharin [sic] Ingram in Brunswick County, VA, both on page 753.[10]

Chambliss-539 and Chambliss-14 appear to represent the same person because: newly created duplicate - please merge. Not sure how you missed Chambliss-14 when you created Chambliss-539, since the names & dates are the same.

Ancestry information (from an unreliable source), from his father's profile:
Birth 1700, Prince George, VA (APID 1,4725::3885745; Family Data Collection - Individual Records. Edmund West, comp.). Death 1768, Sussex Co, VA. Marriage 1728, Prince George, Co, VA.

edit - redid bio... removed note that Mary Chamnis was his mother, as this is likely but not supported by a reliable source (e.g., the 1717 will of Henry names Mary his wife but does not specify that she is the mother of his children)

oops. biography is about his father, so Mary Chamnis was the mother of this Henry, and she was executor/wife of the Henry with the 1717 will.

I think I need to redo this profile to be clearer!

mother was not executor with Wm. Robert Bolling. his wife was. From transcription of his will:

"Item. I make and ordain constitute and appoint my loving wife and Wm.Robert Bolling my Executor and Executrix of this my Will ..."

His name is also transcribed as Chamnis.
