Biography

Emily Charter was born in 1834 and christened on 7th December 1834 at Hollym, Yorkshire. She was the daughter of John Charter and his wife Frances Atkinson. [1].

In 1841 Emily was living with her parents and four siblings at Hollym,Yorkshire[2][3][4]. Head of household is John Chater 35 a Farmer, his wife Frances 30, and children Sarah 8, Emily 6, Ann 4, Eliza 2 and 2 month old John, all born in Yorkshire. Also living at the address are Thomas Greensides 25 male servant, Robert Eshleam 20 male servant, Elizabeth Bailey, female servant and Elizabeth Hurman 14 female servant.

The 1851 census shows Emily still living with her family, now with three more children, though Ann was not present, at Hollym[5][6][7]. Head of the household is her father John Charter 47 a Farmer of 224 Acres, employing 2 men and 2 boys, his wife Frances 42, and children Sarah Frances 16, Emily 16, Eliza 11, John 10, Rosabell 8, Lucy Mary 5, and Julia 2. Also living with them are Mary Smales 15 servant, Luke Stathers nephew 26, and George Hastings 20 servant.

Emily married in 1857 and can be found on the Marriage Index as, Emily Charter, March quarter 1857 at Beverley, Yorkshire, England, United Kingdom[8][9][10][11]. John Smales Vickers of full age widower a Grocer of Beverley, Father Robert Vickers Farmer and Emily Charter of full age spinster of Beverley, father John Charter a Hotel Keeper, were married by License. Witnessed by W.M.Hitchin and A.J.Lythe. He had three children from his first marriage, but together they had ten children:

  6. Frances Vickers,

On 13 March 1858 her daughter Eliza was christened at Beverley, Yorkshire, England, United Kingdom[12].

On 24 September 1859 her daughter Annie was christened at Beverley, Yorkshire, England, United Kingdom[13].

On 20 Jun 1860 her son John was christened at Beverley, Yorkshire, England, United Kingdom[14].

The 1861 census[15][16][17]. Head of the Household John S.Vickers 33, wife Emily 26, 3 children from his first marriage, Emma 9, Robert 7 and Mary 7, plus 3 children from this marriage, Eliza 3, Anne 2, and John S 4 months. Also living with them are George Robson 21 and George Herrall 16, assistants to her husband. John Bitton apprentice to Husband and a feamal servant, Fanny Ezard.

On 29 July 1862 her daughter Gertrude was christened at Beverley, Yorkshire, England, United Kingdom[18].

On 27 December 1865 her son Thomas was christened at Saint Mary and Saint Nicholas, Beverley, Yorkshire, England, United Kingdom[19].

1871 shows Emily living with her family in Beverley[20][21][22]. Head of household John Smales Vickers 42 Grocer, Emily 35 and children, Robert 17, Eliza 13, Annie 12, John S 10, Gertrude 8, Thomas 5, Frances Emily 4 and young Alfred 2.

On 6 October 1871 three children; Alfred, Frances Emilly and Lucy were christened at Saint Mary and Saint Nicholas, Beverley, Yorkshire, England, United Kingdom. Thet wer not however triplets. [23][24][25].

By 1881 the family have moved to Walkergate, Beverley, Yorkshire, [26][27][28]. Head of the household is her husband John aged 53, Emily herself 46 and their children Gertrude 18, Thomas 15, Frances Emily 14, Alfred 12, Lucy Jane 7 and Harold 1.

1891 sees Emily now aged 54 (57?) living with her family in Beverley, Yorkshire[29][30][31]. Household John Smales Vickers head 64, Herself, Emily 54, children Gertrude 37, Thomas 25, Frances Emily 26, Lucy Mary 17 and Harold 11.

1901, Emily is now 64 (66?) and living in Beverley[32][33][34]. At there home are John Smales Vickers head 74, herself and one child Harold, aged 21.

In 1908 Emily`s husband John Smales Vickers passes away.

On the 1911 census Emily is now widowed and living alone at 3 Westmoreland Avenue, Bridlington.[35][36][37].


Emily does not pass away for a further 13 years, but dies in 1924. She can be found on the Death Index as Emily S. Vickers aged 89, March quarter 1924, place Bridlington, Yorkshire[38][39][40].
