Biography
James Chase was born in Hampton, Norfolk, Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1649. His parents were Thomas and Elizabeth (Philbrick) Chase.[1][2]
James married Elizabeth Green on 2 November 1675 in Hampton.[3][4][5] Their marriage was also recorded on Nantucket records.[6]
James and Elizabeth had surviving children:[7]
- Abigail (1681) , married John Chase
- Dorothy (1686) , married John Chapman
- Mary (1688) , married Job Chapman
A daughter Hannah (1677) died young.
No death records have been found for James. His wife Elizabeth married, second, Joseph Cass, after Joseph's wife died in 1692. The date of their marriage is not known, but WikiTree attaches four children to Joseph and Elizabeth. Since Elizabeth would have been 44 in 1700, she must have had the children beginning in 1695 at the latest. This implies that James died before that year.
Find a Grave has his death date as 7 Mar 1704, in Hampton.
Research Notes
There are records for James' birth and marriage in Nantucket town vital records that are perplexing, because there appears to be no records of either of his parents ever living on Nantucket. His father died in Hampton in 1652, and his mother remarried twice in that town, and died there. The record of his birth in the Nantucket Births has "James, h. Elizabeth Green". Therefore, it was obviously placed in the Nantucket records at a much later date. Similarly, James is unlikely to have married in Nantucket.
