Biography

Nicholas Chasteen, son of Jesse and Levitet (Flowers) Chasteen, was born in Rockcastle County, Kentucky, on October 15, 1835. In 1850, he was living in Garrard County, Kentucky, with his parents and siblings, Rhoda, Jesse, Orson and Margaret. His father was a farmer. The 1860 US Census records show him living in Rockcastle County with his brother John, and his wife and 8 children.

During the Civil War, Nicholas was a 3rd sergeant in the 4th regiment, Kentucky mounted cavalry, Company G, Union Army. He rose to the rank of corporal.

After the war, Nicholas married Mary Margaret Snyder (April 17, 1865) in Madison County, Kentucky. Nicholas was a school teacher and also a farmer. Their children included Susie, John, James, Simon, Jesse, Matilda, Marian, Mary M., Harry, and Cal. In 1900, the family was living east of Berea, and only Marian, Mary, and Harry were still at home. In 1910, Nicholas and Margaret had moved to Berea. Margaret died in 1918 and Nicholas in 1920. They are buried in the Berea Cemetery.
