Biography

Katherine Chaucer may have been the only daughter of John Chaucer and his wife Agnes Copton, who were the parents of poet Goeffrey Chaucer. She was probably born about 1345, before the Black Death. She may have married, some time before 1366, Simon Manning of Codham, Kent. They may have had a son John.

In 1366, Katherine and her husband Manning sold property in Greenwich to his partner in business Robert Atwood, which she had recently inherited - possibly from her father, who died in that year. [1] [2]

A pedigree included with the 1619 Visitation of Kent claimed that the wife of Simon Manning was "Catherina, soror Galfridi Chawcer militis celeberini poetae Anglicani", which is incorrect, as Geoffrey Chaucer was not knighted. This is the only record directly connecting Katherine with Chaucer, and as it is not a contemporary one, it can not be considered totally reliable. The pedigree was not part of the original Visitation records but apparently a subsequent product of an arms painter named Richard Mundy, who sometimes worked with them. [3] [1] [2] [4]

In 1386, Geoffrey Chaucer stood surety for Simon Manning, who, along with Robert Atwood, was being sued for debt. [1] [2]

These circumstances are consistent with Katherine, wife of Simon Manning, being a sister of Geoffrey Chaucer, although the connection must be considered tenuous. It is marked "uncertain".

More on Agnes de Copton-1

"'She was the daughter of a man named John of Copton, and niece and heiress to one of London’s quiet rich, Hamo of Copton, citizen and moneyer (or mint-officer) of London, who died in 1349. Hamo Copton was survived by at least one son, Nicholas, upon whose death without issue the Copton property was apparently to devolve to Agnes.'219"

Agnes's cousin, Nicholas, died without issue later in 1349.

The Rootsweb tree cited left lists this as the source of footnote 219 as: John Gardner, The Life and Time of Chaucer, New York: Knopf, 1977. <https://sites.rootsweb.com/~barbpretz/ps01/ps01_325.htm>

Agnes de Copton-1 should be linked as Catherine Chaucer-12 Manning's mother. John le Chaucier (his aunt's foiled plan notwithstanding) had only one wife, who was the mother of both his known children. When her uncle Hamo de Copton and his son, her cousin, died of the plague in the late 1340s, Agnes inherited his London holdings, which gave a big boost to the already wealthy Chaucer family fortune. This may be one reason both Chaucer children married up. This is from memory of Geoffrey Chaucer's biography ca p15, which I can't properly cite because my library is packed up. (However, it's well known; read Agnes's bio on Wikipedia and follow citations there.) Can someone with pre-1500 certification please fix this so Geoffrey and Catherine show up as full siblings? Ta.
