Biography

Capt Martin Cherrie served in the United States Civil War.

Martin was born in Belfast Ireland in 1820. He immigrated to America in 1837 and lived in Ohio, then Lafayette, Indiana, before settling in Knoxville, Iowa.

He was married at Lafayette, Indiana, September 28, 1853, to Agnes Breckenridge.
Martin and Agnes came to Knoxville, Marion County, Iowa, in 1856. He was a merchant, then a miller.
The family of Martin and Agnes Cherrie living in Knoxville after 1856 included the following children:
Mary B. Cherrie, born 1844 (a decade before Martin married Agnes and came to Knoxville), mother unknown.
Millah M. Cherrie, born in Knoxville, 1857.
Martin B. Cherrie, born in Knoxville, 1861.
George K. Cherrie, born in Knoxville, 1865.
Alice Cherrie, born 1871, parents unknown, adopted by Martin and Agnes.
Martin served in the U.S. Civil War, joining the Union Army from Iowa. He was a Captain.
He passed away in Knoxville in 1899, a few months shy of his 80th birthday.
