Martin was born in Belfast Ireland in 1820. He immigrated to America in 1837 and lived in Ohio, then Lafayette, Indiana, before settling in Knoxville, Iowa.
- He was married at Lafayette, Indiana, September 28, 1853, to Agnes Breckenridge.
- Martin and Agnes came to Knoxville, Marion County, Iowa, in 1856. He was a merchant, then a miller.
