Biography

John Frederick was born about 1855 in Kings County, New Brunswick.

He first married Margarie Irvine. She died 24 Feb 1880, aged 27. The 25 Feb 1880 edition of The Daily Telegraph reported: "d. Moore St., Portland (St. John) Tuesday morn. 24th inst., Margarie Cheyne w/o John F. Cheyne, 27th year, left husband, infant child. Funeral from her residence Moore St., Thursday afternoon 2 o'clock."[1]

In 1881 John F. Cheyne, machinist, 26, widower and son Robert, 1, were living in the household of Lavinia Apt in Saint John, Saint John Co,, New Brunswick.

He married secondly, 12 Dec 1882 in Saint John, Rebecca McLellan Wood. She was born 5 Jun 1858 and died 8 Jun 1939. The 14 Dec 1882edition of The Daily Telegraph reported: "m. At residence of bride's father, Garden St., Saint John, 12th inst., by Rev. W. Dobson, John F. Cheyne, Portland (St. John) / Rebecca M. Woods second d/o George Woods, Esq."[2]

In 1891, Rebecca Cheyne, 32, was listed in one household with her parents and two sisters. John F. Cheyne, engineer dredge, 34, Minnie, 7, Ethel A, 5, Harold J, 3 and Grace A, 3 months along with another dozen people were listed as lodgers in the same house but as a separate household, in Saint John, Saint John Co, New Brunswick.

In 1901, John F., engineer, 45, Rebecca, 42, Minnie, 17, Ethel, 15, Harold, 13, Grace, 10, Bella [sic], 7, Luella, 4, and Frederick, 2 were residing in Saint John, Saint John Co, New Brunswick.

In 1911, Rebecca, 52, Grace A., 20, Zella W., 17, Luella, 15, Frederick McL, 12 and Robert W., 9 were residing in Westfield, Kings Co, New Brunswick.

In 1921, J. F., engineer, 66, Rebecca, 63 and Zella, nurse, 23 were residing in Bathurst, Gloucester Co, New Brunswick.

He died 22 May 1934 in Bathurst and is buried in Fernhill Cemetery, Saint John.

  1. Robert Irvine, b. c 1880, d. 6 Feb 1886. The 9 Feb 1886 edition of The Daily Telegraph reported: "d. Portland (St. John) 6th inst., Robert Irvine Cheyne, age 6, s/o John F. Cheyne and late Margarie Cheyne Funeral from his father's residence Portland St., Tuesday 2 o'clock."[3]
