"In loving memory of John Cheyne, accidentally drowned in West Africa 26 June 1906, 26 years; fought in the Boer War. Also his brothers Lenox Nicol Cheyne, Main Body, killed in action at Gallipoli 23 May 1915, 22 years; Gordon Cheyne, killed in Somme Battle 15 September 1916, 21 years. Faithful unto death."

This headstone was one of the two erected on a burial plot which John's mother Jane McShannon had purchased after the death of another son, Phoenix Evans [Jimmy] Cheyne who'd died on 25 May 1914 at the age of 26.
