William Cheyne, the seventh child and second son of James Cheyne and his first wife Ann Mearns, was born on 17th May 1853 at Peterhead in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. Although the FamilySearch website has what is claimed to be a transcription of his christening, that particular webpage gives William's birthdate as 17 June 1853, and the date of his christening as 1st June 1853 … ie, 16 days before he was born![1] These dates conflict with Jim Cheyne's online Cheyne Family website which states that James was born on "17th May 1853 in Peterhead, Peterhead Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland".[2]
William died at Murthilley in Peterhead parish on 23rd September 1854 when he was 16 months old.[3] Although no reference to the location of his burial has yet been found, he may possibly have been buried at Peterhead Old Cemetery in the family plot where his mother and four of his siblings were also buried.
