Capt Thomas Chidgey was from a long-established based Somerset family involved in the coastal trade between 1800-1920. Chidgey was sent to sea as a young man and taught himself how to paint. He specialised in painting ships / boats / schooners at full sail, at sea. He married Capt Robert Wedlake's daughter, and was given 4 ships as a wedding present. He continued to sail and paint and was the father to eight children. He was rarely paid much for his paintings but he took on commissions if an owner supplied canvass and paint, as he dearly loved to paint. Chidgey's ability to illustrate all of the rigging and sail structures of the various craft he illustrated was due to his painting skill and knowledge of ships. His collection of paintings served as a historical records of important historical events such as the storm at Watchet harbour in 1900 that wiped out the harbour and destroyed many ships.
