"Glode Dugar Chubb was born on April 26, 1796, in Poultney, Vermont. he purchased land in Bucklin Township in 1826. In 1828, he married Pamela Pattison. They had seven children. One daughter died in childhood, and a son, Lucius Wolford Chubb, died in a hospital in Philadelphia from wounds received at Gettysburg. Lucius was buried at the family cemetery located on the north side of Warren Road, a quarter mile west of Hix Road. In 1853, the Chubbs moved to a farm one mile east of the Village of Wayne at Michigan Avenue and Venoy Road where the Walgreen Drug Store is now located. In 1866, the Chubbs moved to a home he built on Brush Street. Glode Chubb was described as an ardent Whig and Abolitionist during the existence of those two political parties. Then he became a staunch Republican. He voted in every presidential election. His house at the Rouge River was one of the stations on the Underground Railroad. Pamela died in 1884. Glode died in 1888 at the age of 92. Both were buried at the "Chubb burying ground" also known as Hayward Cemetery." [1]
"In 1826, the first land was bought in the northwest area of Westland Township by Globe D. Chubb. At this time, however, Westland, was known as "Nankin Township.
"Chubb, and his brother, Jonathan Frisbee, came from New York State and settled on 88 acres of land in the northwest quarter of Section 7. As early as 1832, Chubb began to subdivide his property. The first 40 acres he sold to Abel Patchin. In 1836, he sold 8 acres to Robert Morris and in 1853 , 160 acres were sold to Stephen Hayward. This last purchase includes the area along Warren Road, where Chubb Cemetery still stands.
"Chubb also became involved in his local township politics. He was elected the second Clerk of Nankin Township in 1832, and elected Supervisor in 1833 and 1838. Even later, in 1865, Chubb became the Township's first Highway Commissioner.
"One of Chubb's greatest contributions, may have been his role as an agent of the underground railroad. He hid fugitive slaves in his home, which had come down the Rouge River from Ypsilanti, to his home, on the River's edge." [2]
The September 7, 1841 edition lists Glode D. Chubb as a one of a number of nominees for Representative at a Abolition Convention held in Dearborn, Michigan. [3]
