Biography

Joseph Churchill settled near the old family home in Newington, formerly part of Wethersfield, and lived in the old Red House, later known as the Dowd House, and owned and operated a grist mill, and his son Joseph succeeded him in that occupation. Born in Newington, 1750, and lived there in the old "Red House," Known as the "Dowd House" later. Married, Sept 11, 1777, Rhoda Goodrich, born March 25, 1750. She was the daughter of Benjamin, and she died Feb. 24, 1827, aged seventy-seven. He owned and operated a grist-mill, and his sons followed him in that business. He died April 26, 1812 in Newington Parish, CT. They had three children. The line of ascendancy ends here as far as certainty is concerned. As published in The Churchill Family in America it was previously assumed that Joseph Churchill son of Joseph and Lydia Dickerman of Bolton was drowned Jan. 1 1737 and could not have been his father. It is more likely that Joseph above was the son of Giles Churchill, son of Ensign Samuel Churchill. A tradition coming from his oldest daughter, Sarah, born in 1778, that her father's family was driven from their home at a place called "Three Rivers" by the Indians seems to point to Giles Churchill, who left Newington, and in 1751 and settled at the forks of The Delaware River and was driven off with his family and died in Florida, N.Y. in 1771. He had 5 children born at "The Forks" but he may have had others born there. [1]
