Jean Claprood is an unconfirmed Hessian soldier who came to fight with the British Army in the American Revolution War and stayed in Canada after 1783. His uncanny last name, the period and the fact he married in the Church of England supports this assertion. His paper trail in Quebec goes back to 1792. See notes section for hypotheses about his german origins.
In the Protestant Church of England St-James in Three-Rivers (Trois-Rivières), on 9 OCT 1800, John Clapworth of the said town, single man, a miller, married Marie-Anne Naud dit Labrie of the same town, single woman.[1] Marie-Anne is the daughter of Jean Pierre Naud dit Labrie (1729-1788) and Anasthasie Daigle (1738-1822).
Children with Marie-Anne:
Catherine (1787 - 1813), m. to Michael Philon (Phelon)
+Louis (Lewis) (1783 - 1855), m to (1) Josephte Vallerand and to (2) Thérèse Potving
Elie (1795 - 1811)
Pierre (1798 - )
Augustin (1801 - 1801)
Ursule (1802 - 1802)
+Isaïe (1805 - 1871) , m. to Françoise Godfrois Duchateau
On 13 JAN 1802, 4 children are baptized at Saint-Pierre-de-Sorel catholic parish, where they are "strangers"[2]:
Joseph, 10 years and 2 months old
Louis, 8 years and 9 months old
Elie, 6 years and 5 months old
Catherine, 14 years and 4 months old.
At his son Isaïe baptism on 5 MAR 1805, record states Isaïe is the legitimate son of Jean Frédérique Claprod and Marie Anne Labry. This is the first time Frederic is mentioned.[3]
On 1 SEP 1835, in the cemetery of the catholic parish of Immaculée-Conception in Trois-Rivières, Jean Glabrode is buried at the age of 79 years old. He died on 30 AUG 1835 in Three-Rivers and was the husband of late Marianne Labry. Present were Jean Gaboury, Jean-Baptiste Boisclere (Boisclair) and many others.[4]
Notes on his german origins
John Cleprod deserted the British Army 19 JUN 1782 in Savannah. He was from Germany, wagonner in regiment von Knoblauch. He deserted at the same date as Caspar Vischell, who was part of the same regiment.[5]
Before 1780, regiment von Knoblauch was originally known as regiment von Wissenbach. HETRINA mentions 17 soldiers of the regiment who deserted in June 1782, one of them is Henrich Klippert born about 1747/1748 in Oberaula. [6]
Another theory revolves around Friedrich Klaprot. HETRINA lists him as a member of Regiment von Rall (that becomes von Angelelly later). He was born around 1752-1753 and was from Osterode in the Hanovre area.[7]The only problem is that Klaprot was released with full honors after the regiment's return to Germany on October 25, 1783.
