Henry Mason Clark was born on January 6, 1834 in Wayne County, Illinois.[1] Sometime before 1850, he moved to Arkansas. He lived in Hot Spring, Hot Spring County, and rented a room with James Sumter and his family. He worked as a laborer to earn a living.[2] He married Nancy Elizabeth Greer on March 19, 1858 in Conway County, Arkansas.[3] After his marriage, he lived in Liberty, Van Buren County, Arkansas near the Liberty Springs post office.[4]
When the Civil War started, he enlisted in the Union Army on February 12, 1863 in Fayetteville, Washington County, Arkansas as a private. He was assigned to the 1st Arkansas Infantry, Company C.[5] On April 16, 1864, his company was on a patrol in search of rebel guerillas and bandits. As they left Galley Rock, his scout was fired on by a party of rebels, and he received a severe gunshot just below the knee on the left leg. He was later discharged in St. Louis, Missouri on November 9, 1864 for his injury during the service.[6]
After the war, he lived in Gally Rock, Yell County, Arkansas. He worked as a farm laborer to earn a living.[7] In 1880, he lived in Gregory Township, Conway County.[8]
