Biography

William Clarke was born in Lancashire, England.

William Henry Clarke was born about 1854 in Manchester, Lancashire.

William married Mary Jane Buckley on 12 Nov 1876 at Holy Trinity Church in Chester. Both were of full age (21 or more), and neither had been married before. William was living in Trinity Court, Mary Jane's address was in Crane Street. William's occupation was given as engineer. Their fathers were named as William Clarke (painter) and Richard Buckley (blacksmith). The witnesses were Richard Buckley and Ann Clarke.

William was a marine engineer. In 1901 he was living in Bran Street, Toxteth Park, Liverpool. In 1911 he was living in Prince Edwin Street, Everton, Liverpool.

He passed away in 1935, and was buried at Allerton Cemetery, Liverpool, on19th March ^[1].

Research Notes

Two possible baptisms of William Henry Clarkes with father William found in Manchester within 2 years of 1854. One was the son of William and Charlotte; his father was a surgeon, so clearly not a match based on his father's occupation.

The other was the son of William Clarke and Elizabeth (Bowden) Clarke, who married in 1852 in Manchester.^[2] His father William seems to have died not long after this William Henry Clarke was born, because no other Clarke children with mother's maiden name Bowden appear to have been registered in this part of the country, and Elizabeth (Bowden) Clarke was widowed and living with her parents by 1861.^[3][4] This William Henry Clarke's birth was registered in the third quarter of 1853, in Manchester district, with mother's maiden name Bowden. By 1871 he was a brickmaker. While this is not the same occupation as engineer, both were probably relatively low-skilled manual jobs - engineer probably meant driver of a stationary steam engine, and in 1891 he was a general labourer, so it's quite plausible the same person would have done both these jobs at different times.
