Elswick was born in 1831. He died in 1916. He is the son of Caleb Clay and Zilpha Akers. He was a Corporal in the US Civil War.

Story

The following are notes gathered throughout the years from various family members who knew Greenville and Elswick Clay.

Greenville and his brother, Elswick, were Confederate soldiers during the US Civil War between 1863-1866. Greenville was a private ranked in and out. (NOTE: See source document in Image section) Elswick was a Corporal in the same company and Cavalry.

16th Regiment, Company H, VA Cavalry, Ferguson's Battalion. They fought in West Virginia including the conflict at Droop Mountain. Later it saw action at Gettysburg, returned to WV, then participated in various engagements in the Shenandoah Valley.
