Alice was born in Illinois, likely at Council Hill Township, Jo Daviess County on about 20 May 1848. (Her headstone recorded her age as 28 years, 11 months and 2 days old when she died. Find a Grave records her birthplace as Wisconsin, but this is an error.) She was a daughter of Richard Clifton and Mary Chalder.
Alice and her family left Illinois probably in early 1853 for California and the Gold Rush, arrived via covered wagon in El Dorado County, in late 1853 and settled soon after in Middletown, which was adjacent to Placerville, or Hangtown. Her father was a gold miner. ("Pioneer of Eldorado County" in The Mountain Democrat, Placerville, California, 17 July 1947, page 10.) [1]
She married Merritt Torrance on 20 May 1866 at El Dorado County, California.
She died on 22 April 1877 in California and was buried in Middletown Cemetery, Placerville Township, El Dorado County, California with her son Franklin Torrance, who died when he was just over a year old. Other members of her family are also buried at Middletown Cemetery, including her parents.
