Biography

John Clowes Jr. was a Delawarean.
1776 Project
John Clowes Jr. performed Patriotic Service in Delaware in the American Revolution.

There are two records of a man named John Clowes born in December of 1730. One birth was registered in 1730 in Delaware. The other was born on December 5th, 1730 in York, Pennsylvania [Please see research notes].[1][2]

He was the son of John Clowes. [3]

John Jr. married Mary Draper on 7 September, 1758 in Delaware, British Colonial America.[4][5][6][7]

They had at least four children:

  1. Isaac Clowes[7]
  2. Peter Clowes[8][7]
  3. Alletta Clowes[7]
  4. Sarah Clowes[7]

His father made him executor of his estate in his will signed in April 1761. John continued to live in Sussex, Delaware. He bought property on Broadkill Creek in 1784.[3]

John was in a military record on July 23rd, 1774 in Sussex, Delaware. He was appointed "by the freeholders of Sussex County, Delaware" as a member of the "Boston Relief Commitee" for Sussex County, Delaware. [9]

John wrote his will on August 20th, 1784. [7]

He died in Sussex County, Delaware on in February of 1790. His age at his death is recorded as "59 years, 3 months, 19 days". He was buried on the 24th of February. When his age is subtracted from his burial date this results in an estimated calculated birth date of November 5th, 1730. [10]

Sussex County records name his burial place as "On dirt road from Milton to Boulevard."[11]

His son Peter Clowes passed away in 1811.[8]

About the study
My interest in the Clowes surname in general comes from a close family line, but the idea of conducting a one-name study was born when I attempted to document the "common knowledge" with regard to past research on my line. Because my own Clowes line came from England to America prior to 1700, removed to Canada following the Revolutionary War, and eventually returned to America in the mid 1800s, I will begin with those locations and add others as the study progresses.
