Private Isham Cloyd was born in 1832 in Sussex, Virginia. He fought in the Civil War as part of the 5th Regiment US Colored Infantry. He died of wounds received in battle on October 8, 1864, at Fort Monroe Hospital in Virginia at the age of 32. He may have had an alias of "Joe Bailey."
Research Notes
Widow Mary Bailey filed a pension application and there is a note that Isham's alias is "Joe Bailey." Several Joe Bailey's in Virginia at this time and all appear to be white. This is a mystery. Also unable to positively identify Mary Bailey.
