Walter was born in 1894. He was the son of Edmund Clutterbuck and Madeline Raikes. [1]
He was commissioned in 1913 with the rank of officer, in the service of the Royal Scots Fusiliers.
Walter fought in the First World War in Gallipoli, Egypt, Palestine and South Russia. He was awarded the Military Cross (M.C.) and he was awarded the Distinguished Service Order (D.S.O.).
He married Gwendoline Atterbury Younger (daughter of Harry George Younger) on 16 October 1919 at Edinburgh, Scotland.
They had one son and one daughter.
He was Commanding Officer of the 1st Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers in 1939. He fought in the Second World War between 1939 and 1946; he was Commanding Officer of the 19th Infantry Brigade in 1940; he was GOC of the 1st Infantry Division in 1941; he was GOC of the 55th Infantry Division in 1943.
He was Head of the British Military Mission to Egypt in 1946.
He lived at Hornby Castle, Bedale, Yorkshire, England.
Walter died in 1987 at the age of 92.[3]
