Whilst the family initially settled at Bowden, in September 1852, John and Josiah set out for western Victoria with some others in bullock wagons. Most of the family followed them at various times in the next few years and they settled around Avoca and St Arnaud. The only one of the Coates to remain in Adelaide was Charles Henry, who spelled his name Coats.
CHARLES HENRY married BETSEY BROWN, daughter of Thomas and June Brown,
gardeners, of Plympton, Adelaide, in Holy Trinity Church of England on
the 12.2.1864.
Charles Henry was the only Coates child to remain in South Australia
after all his brothers and sisters had moved over to Central Victoria.
He and his elder brother John always spelt their surname Coats (without
the e), and to this day, his descendants in South Australia spell it
that way.
In 1864, Charles Henry was a labourer, living at Hindmarsh. It was here
that their first child was born. In the next ten years, he and Betsey
moved three times, firstly from Hindmarsh to Wallaroo in 1867, then they
moved to Boors Plains in 1870. This actually was only a few miles from Wallaroo, where Charles now took up farming. It is very interesting to
note that all the Coates boys at some stage of their life, were farmers.
In 1878, however, he was a carter at Port Pirrie, and after his working
days, he and Betsey retired back at Brompton in Adelaide.
Their children were:
JOHN THOMAS born 9- 9-1865 at Hindmarsh
SARAH JANE born 12- 3-1868 at Wallaroo
ALFRED CHARLES born 29- 3-1874 at Boors Plains
Betsey had a child before she married Charles Henry, a daughter named,
MARY FRANCES, and born on the 18-8-1862. The birth certificate states
parent's address at Plympton, but does not give the name of the father
(simply Unknown). Later in life Mary Frances married William Merritt of
Rainbow, in Victoria and they had sixteen children.
JOHN THOMAS COATES was the only child of Charles Henry and Betsey to
have children. ALFRED his brother did not marry, as at the age of 25, he
died of pneumonia, in the Royal Adelaide Hospital. Prior to that he was
a gardener and lived at Athelstone, not far from Brompton and Hindmarsh,
he died on the 17-1-1900.
It is interesting to note that Charles Henry Coates lived himself at
Brompton, and the old home still stands there today and as well as that,
there are descendants of his still living in Brompton today (Steve Painter).
Additional information about his family:-
The article below provides some details about Charles' death and indicates he was killed by a horse and cart running over him. At that time they lived near Wallaroo, and after his death the children came to Adelaide and became dispersed among various relatives.

THE RELATIVES OF THE DECEASED.
Our Hindmarsh correspondent writes:- Some relatives of the late Mrs. Willie are living at Coglin-street, Bromptcn Park. The maiden name of the unfortunate woman was Sarah Jane Coates, and Mr. John Thomas Coates. brickmaker, of Coglin-street, is her brother, and for nearly three years he did not know where she was. He last saw her at the residence of Mrs. G. J. Griffin, who was a cousin of hers. Mrs. Griffin, wife of Mr. A. Griffin, of Frost-street, Brompton, states that the deceased with her brother, Mr. J. T. Coates, lived with her husband's mother, the late Mrs. Ann Griffin, at East-street, Brompton. until the death of her parents. When Mrs. Griffin's death took place, about thirteen years ago, they made their home chiefly at Mr. G. J. Griffins. John, the brother, following the brickmaking trade, and she going to service. The last time they saw her was at her brother's house, and Mrs. Coates, the sister-in-law of deceased, who was ill, could not accompany her to the station, although she wished to see her off. The deceased said she was going to Alma. Mrs. Griffin, wife of Mr. Frederick Griffin, also of Coglin-street, and another cousin to the deceased, when speaking of the affair said there were five in the Coates family, and they were unfortunate in being left orphans pre ious to coming to Adelaide. Their father was killed by a horse and cart running over him. At that time they lived near Wallaroo, and it was after their father's death that the children came to Adelaide and became dispersed among various relatives. The eldest married' soon after, and later on the second of tho family married a Mr. Marriott. John and Sarah Jane lived with Mrs. Ann Griffin until she died, when the former went to Mr. G. J. Griffin's and the latter to Norwood, where she entered service. The youngest of the family was a boy, and be lived for years with another relative named Mrs. King, who resided at Plympton. He was married, and lived in the North. Mrs. Griffin did not know the where abouts of any of them except John, who was new married and lived near her. She had not the least doubt that the deceased was Sarah Ann Coates, because she left to go in the direction of Hamley Bridge. Mrs. Griffin was not surprised at not hearing from Mrs. Willis, as she Could neither read nor write. The late Mrs. Willis was rather short and thick-built.:
