The story goes like this, that Edward Elliott Cockrum, his wife Martha Elizabeth Simms, Cockrum arrived in Stanton County, Kansas. In the spring of 1885. They had traveled from their farm near Frankfort, Kentucky. distance from Frankfort, Kentucky to Manter, Stanton Co., Kansas in this day and time is 1048.

To travel, and if you travel by car it would take you 22 hours and 47 minutes to get there. So traveling in a cover wagon. I guess it would take about 3 or 4 months or even up to 6 months to get there).

There family of consisted of.

Matilda Florence Cockrum 10,.

Samuel Joseph Cockrum 8,.

John Vontress Cockrum 5, &.

Edward & Martha each drove a covered wagon, Richard Isom herded the three milk cows, two mares, one colt, a balky mule on his well worked saddle horse. The three piglets were crowded in their box, while the six hens & one rooster brought up the rear in their cage. Edward & Martha took up a claim on Bear Creek about one mile from the Colorado line. Their first year was taken up with digging a dugout & building a one room sand stone house, trying to raise a garden & fix shelters for their animals. They also started a school for their children & several neighbors children and a Mrs. Jenkins taught their school. Edward was a stone mason. He helped build the old rock school house for his sons, daughter & neighbors.
