Biography

John was born about 1775. He was the son of Hugh Coffey and Agnes Montgomery. He passed away about 1816.

From Klayder book: "John Coffey, second child of Hugh Coffey Sr/Agnes Montgomery; b 1775, Lancaster Co., SC. He died ca 1816. A Power of Attorney described below in Lancaster Co., S.C. and is believed to have been buried there. He was married ca. 1793 in Lancaster Co., S.C. to Esther Givens. Family tradition says that they were second cousins. She was born in 1775 and was the daughter of William Givens and Jennet, maiden name unknown. Esther died after 1850 near Campbell Station in Maury, Co., Tenn. It is said that she lived to be over 100. They had four children, all born in Lancaster Co., S.C.:

Nancy Agnes,
William G,
Hugh Wiley, and
Samuel C.

In 1817 (John Coffey is believed to have died ca. 1816) his widow and their children went to Maury Co., Tenn. Their daughter Agnes Nancy was married in 1811 in Lancaster Co., S.C. to Samuel Caskey. They, Samuel's parents, and probably other family members went to Maury Co., Tenn. at that time. It is likely that Esther G. Coffey and her three sons went to Tennessee with her daughter Agnes Nancy and the Caskeys. They were among the first pioneers in that area."
