Biography

Note: compare to Daniel Cogswell (1771-1858), a different person.

This Daniel was born in 1786.[1]

Daniel married Abigail Newcomb 11 Aug 1819 in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada.[2] She was the daughter of Jonathan and Margaret (Cummings) Newcomb.[1]

In the 1871 census, Daniel appears with his daughters Margaret McDonald and Mary Morris in Wolfville, Kings, Nova Scotia. Margaret's husband William is there, as well as Joseph McDonald (18) and Frederick McDonald (8).[3] The Jameson book says that William and Margaret had no children, so either the book is wrong or these were adopted.

Daniel, age 87, son of Elihu and Rebecca Cogswell, died on 1 June 1874 in Horton 35, Kings, Nova Scotia, Canada. His birthplace is shown as Connecticut.[4]

Research Note

At the risk of shocking strict genealogists I am going to rely on The Cogswells in America[1] to distinguish between two Daniels Cogswells who married two Abigail Newcombs. This Daniel, son of Elihu and Rebecca, is number 1503 in their system and is described on page 502. His wife's parents were Jonathan and Margaret (Cummings) Newcomb. Their children were born between 1820 and 1843. The other Daniel, son of Aaron and Susanna, is number 917, described on page 381. His wife's parents were John and Thankful (Burgess) Newcomb. Their children were born between 1803 and 1825.

Of course I will add more direct sources where possible and others are welcome to modify and improve this initial attempt.
