Biography
Lewis was born in 1844 to an unwed teenage girl named Mattie Cole...this from family lore. Family lore also indicated his father was a married Jones man, but his first name was not known. Lewis' daughter Pearl, as she was nearing death, provided this information on the Jones man in question:
- he was a married neighbor man - he lived on Shoal Creek - he had children with his wife who were Lewis' age - he had children named Scott and Velia (these would actually be grandchildren)
It was the last hint that led family researcher, Jane Gilbert, to William Anderson Jones. As it would turn out, Estha Cole of Lawrence Co, TN, who descended from Lewis' uncle William F. Cole, had known his name all along. She declined to share it with Jane because she didn't know her well enough. There was great shame in the Cole family with this out-of-wedlock birth, and it had been drilled into everyone to not speak of it.
Y-DNA testing would confirm that W.C. Cole, grandson of Lewis, was indeed carrying Jones Y-DNA, and autosomal testing of several Cole descendants would show the strong and close relationship with the Jones family.
