Biography

Sarah was born in New York in 1860, the daughter of Isaac P. and Margaret (Harris) Cole.

In 1860, the Cole family lived in New York City. The household included Isaac P., 44, born in New Jersey, a hatter with $30,000 in real estate and $10,000 in personal estate; his wife Margaret, 42, born in NJ; their seven children, all born in New York, John H., 18, apprentice to hatter; Josephine, 16; Philip A., 14; Harriet, 8; Isaac W., 6; Carrie, 4; and a two month old baby girl (Sarah on next Census). Also living with them was Ann Murphy, a servant, 20, born in Ireland. [1]

In 1870, they lived in NYC. The household included Isaac P., 56, a hatter; his wife Margaret, 54; and their six children, John R., 28, clerk in the hat shop; Phillip A., 23, Harriet, 19; Isaac W., 16, in school; Carrie, 14, in school; and Sarah, 10, in school. Also living with them was a domestic servant, Margaret Morr, 31, born in Ireland. [2]
