Biography

Lewis was born in 1828 in Wayne County, Pennsylvania. He was the son of Josiah Cole and Charlotte Brown.[1]

In about 1860 he married Delia, possibly also a Cole. They had two children, Emory Lincoln Cole, b. 1861, and Charlotte M. Cole, b. 1863.

Lewis Cole served in the United States Civil War.

On 23 Sep 1864, he enlisted in Co. G, Pennsylvania 76th Infantry. He was wounded the following Spring at Fort Fisher in North Carolina and died in a hospital in Wilmington.[2][3][4] He is likely buried at Wilmington National Cemetery, probably as "Pvt. L.R. Cole."[5][6]

Research Notes

Lewis Cole is probably buried in Wilmington National Cemetery in the grave marked with the headstone for "Pvt. L.R. Cole, PA."[5] The Register of Deaths of Volunteers includes an entry for Pvt. Lewis K. Cole and another for Pvt. L.R. Cole. However, both men were members of Company G of the 76th Pennsylvania Infantry, both were injured by gun shot and both died in hospital on 18 March 1865 in Wilmington, North Carolina.[3]

It is not impossible that two men with similar names were in the same company and were casualties of the same battle. Both dying on the same day, seems unlikely. Only L.R. Cole has a headstone in Wilmington. No separate burial location for Lewis K. Cole has been found. A 1937 application for a replacement headstone for L.R. Lewis has a notation by the War Department that he was "not identified."[5] This suggests that they did not find him on muster roles or in other records.
