Biography

The Birth Date is a rough estimate. See the text for details.

William Collin

He appears in the Essex visitation as William Collyn, son of Nicholas Collyn of Brackstead, Essex by his first wife. He is stated as having five sons (John, Nicholas, Thomas, William, Kellom). Only male children are shown on the pedigree. [1]
In 1557 William brought suit against Margaret Collyn, the widow of his father Nicholas regarding the manor of Church Hall (in Broxted) and lands in Chaureth and Broxted. The suit shows that the prior of the late dissolved hospital of St. John of Jerusalem in England, being seized in his demesne as of fee of and in the manor of Church Hall and of other lands and tenements in Charyth and Brokeshed, Essex , by deed dated [ blank ] Henry VIII , leased the premises to Nicholas Collyn for 40 years. Nicholas entered into the premises, and then made his will , bequeathing the said farm called Church Hall to Margaret then his wife , to have and to hold to her from the death of the said Nicholas unto the feast of St. Michael next following and from the feast of St. Michael unto the end and term of seven years then to come , except for the tithe of Charyth Hall and the tithes of all the tenants of the manor of Charyth . Nicholas died, and Margaret entered into the premises. William had since the death of his father asked Margaret to put in surety and be bound unto him for the true performance of the covenants comprised in the said indenture , but Margaret refused to do so. [2]

Research note

The Essex visitation shows William as the son of his father's second marriage (to Margaret Yonge), however it is clear from Margaret's will that only Joane is her child by Nicholas, and that by extension John and William are children of the first marriage.
