Biography

On 18 July 1844 John D. Collins married Luisa H. Watson in Franklin, Ohio. [1] Following Luisa's death, John married Rachel Watson on 19 June 1845 in Franklin, Ohio. [2]

After Rachel's death, John married Elizabeth Mary Shanks on 19 July 1849 in Columbus, Franklin, Ohio.

The 1850 US Census shows John Collins, age 31, born New Jersey; wife, Elizabeth Collins, age 23, born Kentucky, and Eliza Collins age 4, Mary Collins age 3, and Edward T. Collins age 2. The children were all born in Ohio. Eliza is probably the same as Evaline in the 1860 census (she is Eva E in her marriage record), and the daughter of John's first wife, Luisa H. Watson. Mary does not appear in later census records. Edward would be the son of John's second wife, Rachel Watson. [3]

In the 1860 US Census John D Collins, age 39, lived in Douglass Township, Webster, Iowa, and listed New Jersey as his birthplace. His household consisted of Mary E, 34, born in Kentucky; Evaline, 15, Ohio; Edward T., 13, Ohio; Estella V., 9, Ohio; Martha P., 7, Ohio; Fidelia, 6, Ohio; Hannibal, 5, Iowa; and Ella, 3, Iowa. [4]

John, a shoemaker, lived with his family in Indianola, Washington Township, Warren, Iowa when the 1870 census was taken in August. Others in the household were given as May (Mary), 44, Kentucky; Fedilia, 16, Ohio; Hannibal, 14, Iowa; Osla Ella, 11, Iowa; Laura, 9, Iowa; John H., 8, Iowa; Theodore, 6, Iowa; and Evalena, 4, Iowa. [5]

By the 1880 Census the family was in Stuart, Adair, Iowa, where John, now 60, worked as a shoemaker. The household was down to Elizabeth, 59; Hannibal, 23, Laura, 20, John, 16, and Theodore, 14. [6]

The Iowa State Census for 1885 shows John 65; Elizabeth, 58; John H. 23; Laura D., 25; Theodore, 20; and Maud, 3. [7] Maud is apparently the daughter of John & Elizabeth's son, Hannibal, whose first wife had died by this time.

The marriage record for John H Collins and Lena Gowdey, on 14 Jan 1886 in Gutherie, Iowa lists John H Collins parents as "J D Collins" and "Elizabeth Shanks". [8] In the 1895 Iowa State Census, still in Adair, Iowa, the household is John, 76; Elizabeth, 68, and Theodore, 28. [9]

In 1900 the census showed JD Collins, 80 and wife "EM", 74, in Stuart, Adair, Iowa. Elizabeth (E M) was shown as the mother of 10 children, 9 of whom were still living. [10]

The 1905 Iowa census shows JD Collins, age 85, a widower living in Lucas, Iowa. [11]

John Dorsey Collins died December 13, 1907, aged 87 years, 3 months and 23 days, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Stella Kinkanon, in Omaha, Nebraska. He was buried beside his wife in (North) Oak Grove Cemetery, Stuart, Guthrie, Iowa. [12] [13]
