The 1850 US Census shows John Collins, age 31, born New Jersey; wife, Elizabeth Collins, age 23, born Kentucky, and Eliza Collins age 4, Mary Collins age 3, and Edward T. Collins age 2. The children were all born in Ohio. Eliza is probably the same as Evaline in the 1860 census (she is Eva E in her marriage record), and the daughter of John's first wife, Luisa H. Watson. Mary does not appear in later census records. Edward would be the son of John's second wife, Rachel Watson. [3]

The Iowa State Census for 1885 shows John 65; Elizabeth, 58; John H. 23; Laura D., 25; Theodore, 20; and Maud, 3. [7] Maud is apparently the daughter of John & Elizabeth's son, Hannibal, whose first wife had died by this time.
