Ernest, son of Wilbur Collins and Cordelia Garfield,^[1][2] was born 18 January 1870 in Tyringham, Massachusetts.^[1] He was raised in Tyringham, where his father worked for the paper mill and his family lived with his maternal grandparents. In 1870, the household included his grandparents Thomas (age 54, farm laborer) and Angeline (47) Garfield, his aunt Isabelle (21), his parents Wilbur Collins (29) and Cordelia (23) and the Collins's children Winfred (2) and Ernest (5 months).^[3]

In 1880, they continued to live with his maternal grandparents, but his father was shown as head-of-household.^[4] The family had grown to include his parents Wilbur (age 39, farm laborer) and Cordelia Collins (33); their children Winifred (11), Ernest (10) and Mabel (7); his grandparents Thomas (64, farm laborer) and Angeline (56); his divorced aunt Isabella Murphy (31, a dress maker); and his divorced maternal great-aunt O. Mary Dorman (52).^[4]

One generation was added by 1900 and another lost. His grandmother Angeline died in 1891^[5] and her husband in 1899.^[6] Ernest's nephew Roy Harold Dowd was born in 1896.^[7] The Collins's household in Lee, Massachusetts, consisted of his parents Wilbur (age 60, a foreman) and Cordelia (54, a rag felter), Ernest (30, bicycle mechanic), his sister Mabel (28) and her husband Wolcott Dowd (27, knife maker) and their child Roy (5).^[8]

On 29 June 1904 in Lee, Lee, Penobscot, Massachusetts, he married Hattie M Wright,^[2] daughter of Lucius Ward Wright and Mary Ann Melius.^[2]

On the 1910 census, Hattie was found living with her brother Charles Edward Wright (age 34) and his two children, Clifford (12) and Hazel (7)—probably temporarily after the departure of the children's mother.^[9] Ernest's record was not found for 1910.

Ernest (age 49, an automobile mechanic) and Hattie (40) resided in Lee, Berkshire, Massachusetts, with her mother Mary Ann Wright (73) and niece Hazel M. Wright (17) in 1920.^[10] Nothing further has been found regarding Ernest's fate.
