She joined the Labour Party in 1916 and was active for many years in politics, unsuccessfully seeking election in Hythe and Hallam, Sheffield.

In the 1930s, Colman served as a magistrate. During the second world war she worked for the Ministry of Labour and the Board of Trade, and as an ARP warden.

In 1945 she was finally elected to Parliament in the constituency of Tynemouth, part of Labour's landslide win that year. She lost her seat to Conservative Irene Ward in 1950 and failed to win it back in 1951.

She passed away in 1971. She had never married.
