They were part of the Scottish settlement in Argyle, Illinois.
James was a traveling salesman.
James was a traveling salesman for the Arcade Manufacturing Company in Rockford. This was something of a big deal in those days and his travels were often mentioned in the Rockford papers.
The marriage did not go well. In 1896 there was a sensational divorce covered in the local papers. He accused Maude of infidelity and refusing to have children. The papers were on his side:
Mr. Colville is a very well known and popular traveling man. He has a host of friends here and has always been known as a good provider, fitting up a pleasant home for his wife and furnishing her with all the luxuries she could desire.[4]
The man James named in the divorce proceedings, Frank Atkinson (also a traveling salesman), denied the charges. He and Maude married and moved to Wisconsin later that year.
Funeral services for James Colville who died Saturday night at St. Anthony's hospital after an illness of ten years, will be held Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock from the home, 530 Catlin st., Rev. W. H. Fulton officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood cemetery.
Mr. Colville was born in Cincinnati, O., Sept. 30, 1848, and came to Illinois with his parents in 1852, the family locating on a farm south of Argyle church.
Here he grew to manhood. For forty years he was a traveling salesman, representing one concern in that capacity for thirty-six years. He was a member of First Presbyterian church here and was affiliated with the Knights of Pythias, the Burns club and the United Commercial Travelers.
He was married to Miss Lillian Parker in September 1899. She survives him with three children, Edith, Earl and Eugene Colville. He leaves two brothers, Robert Colville of Argyle and John Colvilleof Los Angeles, and two sisters, Mrs. James Reid, 621 N. Second St., and Miss Ella Colville.[11]
